Common Plum, also known as Alu Bokhara (Prunus domestica), is a deciduous fruit tree that is native to Europe and Asia. It is widely cultivated for its sweet and juicy fruits, which can be eaten fresh or used for making jams, jellies, and preserves. Here are some tips for growing a common plum plant:
- Climate: Common plum trees grow best in temperate climates with cool winters and mild summers. They require a certain amount of chilling hours during the winter to break dormancy and set fruit. The ideal temperature range for plum trees is between -2°C and 30°C (28°F to 86°F).
- Soil: Plum trees prefer well-drained, loamy soil that is rich in organic matter. The soil should have a pH range of 6.0-7.0. If the soil is too acidic, you can add lime to adjust the pH.
- Planting: Plant the plum tree in a sunny location with good air circulation. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and add compost or well-rotted manure to the soil. Place the tree in the hole and backfill it with soil, making sure the graft union is above the soil level.
- Fertilizer: Plum trees require regular fertilization to produce high-quality fruits. Apply a balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10 in the spring, and again after fruiting. You can also add organic fertilizers such as compost or well-rotted manure.
- Pruning: Prune the plum tree in the winter to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches, and to shape the tree. Pruning also helps to increase air circulation and sunlight penetration, which can improve fruit quality and yield.
- Pest and disease control: Plum trees are susceptible to pests such as aphids, mites, and plum curculio, and diseases such as black knots, brown rot, and bacterial spot. Regular monitoring and control measures such as spraying insecticides and fungicides can help prevent and control these problems.
- Harvesting: Common plum fruits mature in the summer, about 4-5 months after flowering. The fruits are ready to be harvested when they are firm and the skin has a slight give when pressed. Use a sharp knife or scissors to remove the fruits from the tree, taking care not to damage the branches or buds.
